Finding Stillness in the Chaos: Lessons from India

There’s something about India that gets under your skin, not in the way dust clings to your clothes or the scent of spice lingers in the air, but in the way it reaches inside you and rearranges what matters.

This month, my husband Mick, our daughter, and I travelled across Rajasthan: from the sacred ghats of Varanasi, to the pink city of Jaipur, to the royal walls of Diggi Palace and Diggi Fort, where we had the rare privilege of sitting with the Maharaja and Maharani themselves. We wandered through Pushkar’s calm energy, Jodhpur’s blue alleys, the still waters of Jaisalmer, and ended our journey beneath the marble majesty of the Taj Mahal, a monument to love that leaves you speechless, no matter how many photos you’ve seen before.

It was more than a trip. It was a mirror.

In the chaos of colour, sound, and humanity that is India, I found the same reflection we often explore with our nurses and midwives through The Hive Nursing Development and The Hive Experience, the reminder that true growth happens when we stop, listen, and let the world show us who we are becoming.

Connection, the real kind

This journey was part of a promise Mick and I made years ago, that each of our 3 children would have one special trip each with us. Not a holiday, but an experience. A shared adventure that reflects our highest family values: travel and connection.

We wanted to show our daughter what it means to be truly present, to step out of comfort, into curiosity. To see life through a different lens. To understand that connection doesn’t come from Wi-Fi or convenience; it comes from sitting on a rooftop at sunrise, chai in hand, watching life unfold.

It’s the same principle we teach through our mentoring programs and retreats: the power of slowing down to reconnect with yourself, your values, and your purpose.

Growth through experience

India has a way of humbling even the most seasoned traveller. It tests your patience, challenges your perspectives, and demands surrender. But it’s also breathtakingly generous, if you’re open to receiving its lessons.

For me, that lesson was about leadership through stillness.

As nurses, as leaders, as humans we are often drawn into constant doing. But India reminded me that transformation happens in the pauses. Growth is born in reflection, not reaction.

That’s why at The Hive, we don’t just teach career strategy or leadership frameworks. We create space through mentoring, workshops, and retreats for nurses and midwives to breathe again. To realign their careers with their values. To lead from authenticity rather than exhaustion.

The Hive way

Whether it’s standing in a temple in Varanasi, hearing the chants rise from the river, or sitting with a mentee who finally realises her next career step the feeling is the same: clarity. Purpose. A return to self.

That’s the heart of The Hive Nursing Development and The Hive Experience.

We exist to help nurses and midwives rediscover who they are beneath the role to learn, grow, and develop in environments that nurture both their professional and personal selves.

Because just like India, life will always be full of noise. But within that chaos lies an invitation to reflect, reset, and rise, stronger, clearer, and more connected than before.
